An Aberdeen hotel has been granted permission to open a new residents’ bar.
The Britannia Hotel, in Malcolm Road, Bucksburn, submitted an application seeking consent to sell alcohol in its lounge.
Teas, coffees and soft drinks are already served in the area, but now staff will be able to serve bottled booze, primarily to residents.
The hotel had originally applied to extend its opening hours to 1am, which police had objected to, but the proposal was withdrawn before yesterday’s meeting.
Local residents had also objected to the original plans due to concerns about noise.
Concerns had also been raised about the poor state of the area surrounding the hotel and tour buses parking on the pavements outside the building.
However, hotel bosses have promised to address these concerns and ensure buses park in the car park.
The hotel has also been given permission to abolish its conference and function suites, which have been converted into 100 bedrooms.
Richard Liptrott, operations manager, added: “This is going to make a big difference to the lives of people who stay near the hotel – they no longer need to worry about drunken people pouring out into the street after functions, especially over Christmas and New Year.”
