A community swimming pool will open tomorrow – a week behind schedule.
The pool at the £36million Ellon Academy Community Campus was due to open last week for the start of the new school term, but Aberdeenshire Council was forced to keep it closed amid health and safety concerns.
Fears had been raised about the pool’s cleansing system, and over the last week repair teams have been in for maintenance, and to carry out water quality tests.
Last night the local authority confirmed the pool was now safe to open to the public.
Maria Walker, education and children’s services director for the council, said: “We’re very pleased that pupils, the public and swimming clubs will now be able to use this fantastic new facility.
“I would like to thank everybody for their patience while we’ve been working to get the pool open, and to leisure staff who have done a fantastic job in keeping local classes and public access available.”
The current pool at Schoolhill Road – which had stayed open to allow swimming lessons to run – will be closed today to allow for the relocation of staff and equipment to the community campus.
Meanwhile, restrictions remain on drinking water in the campus while testing in the wider building continues.
Bottled water has been issued to pupils while the tests are ongoing.
