Plans to put a “new heart” into the Tillydrone area have moved forward.
Councillors yesterday agreed the £6million community centre should be located at the site of the existing Tillydrone Shopping Centre on Hayton Road.
It comes after a consultation with local residents identified the need for a centre to provide a range of activities, including support for local people to get into employment, a place for groups to meet, exercise or learn and for childcare.
There will also be a community cafe incorporated into the plans.
Half of the project will be funded by the council, with the remaining £3million to be provided by the Scottish Government.
City council officers will now formally consult with the occupiers of the shopping centre about their relocation into the community centre, as will also will also discuss how services can continue during the demolition and construction period.
Councillor Neil Cooney, convener of the communities, housing and infrastructure committee, said: “This is a good news story for the council.
“It is a big site that has the backing of the community and I think it will put a new heart into Tillydrone that will serve to strengthen the community spirit that prevails there.”
