From Jackawawas to Irish wolf hounds, dogs of all shapes and sizes enjoyed an afternoon in the spotlight at an annual family show yesterday.
More than 1,000 people attended the Dawgs fun day at Hazlehead Park in Aberdeen, basking in the sunshine as they watched the pooches strut their stuff in classes ranging from best rescue dog to wiggliest wag.
The best in show prize went to Khia, a staffie-cross belonging to Muriel Graham, of Pitmedden.
She qualified for the final after winning the most magnificent mix class for the girls, while the male winner was shar pei beagle cross Buddy, who belongs to Ian Daniel, of Aberdeen.
Aberdeen schoolgirl Annabelle Davie took home the accolade for best child dog handler after showing off Brussels Griffon Bunty.
And judges ruled that Lynn Arthur’s Jack Russell Isla, from Peterhead, had the wiggliest wag in the whole arena.
Isabel Craik, fundraising coordinator for Dawgs, said: “It was an absolutely brilliant day, the weather was perfect and it was a fantastic crowd with lots of beautiful dogs.
“There was a great atmosphere and a great time was had by all.
“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year.”
As well as the classes, visitors were able to enjoy a range of attractions, including a dog agility demonstration, stalls and a bouncy castle.
Youngsters also got the chance to get up close to the owls Hedwig and Eral, who star in Harry Potter. They pair are based at the Owl and the Pussycat centre near Maud.
A number of other organisations also joined in, including Give a Greyhound a Home (Gagah), PDSA and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.
The fun day is Dawgs’ biggest fundraiser, enabling them to continue rehoming dogs. Over the last 20 years, the charity has paired more than 3,000 pooches with the perfect owner.
Janine Davies, from the charity,, said: “It was a glorious day, there were hundreds of dogs. It’s such a lovely event, and some of rescue dogs were there – it’s lovely to see them being adored.”
