Police believe that a body recovered from an Aberdeenshire harbour may be that of missing north man Lachlan Simpson.
Officers say “early indications” suggest that the body is that of Mr Simpson, who disappeared five weeks ago after a show dance in Dornoch.
His family said that police had kept them updated since the body was recovered from Whitehills Harbour near Banff on Wednesday.
A statement issued on behalf of the 22-year-old’s family said: “Police Scotland has kept us informed of the discovery of a body yesterday and they will continue to keep us updated on progress.
“We want to thank the public for their support during the search for Lachlan and would ask that our privacy be respected whilst these enquiries are carried out.”
Police said that formal identification was still to be concluded and officers from Aberdeenshire and the Highlands are working closely with the Procurator Fiscal’s office.
Mr Simpson, from Embo, was last seen following a dance at the Sutherland Show in Dornoch at about 1.30am on Sunday, July 26.
