A person has died following a fire in a north-east town.
Emergency services were alerted to a fire at a property on Newton Drive, Macduff after midnight this morning (September 9).
Five appliances were scrambled to the blaze from Macduff, Banff, Porstoy, Turriff and Aberchirder .
A height vehicle and two vans supplying breathing apparatus were required for the 46 firefighters who battled the inferno, with a water tower.
A special incident command vehicle also attended the scene.
Local residents who witnessed the incident said they believed the person who died was an older man, visiting someone in the building, though this has not been confirmed by emergency services.
The exact circumstances of the fire are not known at this stage and a Scottish Fire and Rescue (SFRS) spokesperson confirmed that a joint investigation between them and the police will get under-way later today.
The SFRS spokesperson added: “Six people were rescued from the premises and there was one casualty.”
It is believed the person, whose details cannot be released at this time, died of smoke inhalation.
A Police spokesperson said: “Other residents have been treated for smoke inhalation but no-one else is reported to have been injured.
“Road closures with local diversions are in place whilst emergency services remain at the scene of the fire.”
