Plans for a £700,000 upgrade of an all-weather sports ground used for training by Peterhead FC are likely to be approved next week.
Catto Park in Peterhead, opposite the port’s League One side’s home stadium, is also used by residents of the town.
The £726,000 upgrade will involve replacing the existing football pitch, and installing a new play surface for local school children.
In 2013, the council began negotiating a £4million investment into the park as part of a £17million overhaul of the area in partnership with Peterhead Football Club (PFC).
The new pitch would be moved from the existing position, and set back from the current parking facilities on site to allow for the larger project to progress without delay once finalised.
The park was last given an update in 1997.
The Buchan area committee has already backed the plans, but now they will be referred to the policy and resources committee so the cost can be approved.
Stephen Archer, director of infrastructure services, said in a report: “The all-weather surface at Catto Park is coming to the end of its useful life and has given users cause for concern.
“In recent months, there has been dialogue between Peterhead Football Club and officers. Peterhead Football Club remain committee to a partnership to develop the wider proposals, and reiterated that the replacement of the all-weather surface in the existing location will hinder this future development.
“As a result of this and the drainage/soil situation, the committee is being asked to approve revised proposals for an alternative location for the all-weather surface and associated works.
“This will potentially avoid significant abortive costs in the future and ensure Catto Park is well placed to provide sporting facilities to be used by Peterhead Academy.”
PFC’s ambitious scheme for the site include a two-storey cafe, changing rooms, indoors sports and day care facilities.
Part of Balmoor Stadium would be demolished and a gym and community meeting rooms incorporated into the redesign.
Floodlights and new fencing would also be installed.
“The facilities would provide improved drainage for all existing pitches, a replacement all-weather football and rugby pitch, upgraded athletic track and an all-weather hockey surface,” Mr Archer added.
The committee will make a decision on Thursday.
