A murder inquiry has been launched after the body of a man was discovered in an Aberdeen flat.
James Chadwick was found with “unexplained injuries” when police went to his home at Holland Street, near the Kittybrewster area of the city.
Initially officers did not believe the 37-year-old’s death was suspicious.
But following the results of a post-mortem examination, Police Scotland’s major investigation team has now revealed the father’s death is being treated as murder.
Yesterday, shocked friends and family spoke of their devastation at the tragic death of a “one of a kind” man who “would not hurt a soul”.
Mr Chadwick was originally from the north-west of England, but had been living in Aberdeen for several years. His young son also lives in the city.
It is understood his sister died earlier this year.
Members of his family, who live in the Torry area, declined to comment last night.
Detective Chief Inspector Iain Smith, from the major investigation team, revealed that Mr Chadwick had not been seen since August 31.
He had posted a cryptic message on a social media site on August 23, simply saying “Bye”.
One friend said the poignant word meant so much more now.
DCI Smith said it was crucial his team established where Mr Chadwick went and what he did in the days leading up to his death.
“We’re appealing to anyone who has any knowledge of his movements since August 31 to contact police as a matter of urgency,” he said.
“This investigation is at an early stage and it is important we establish what has happened which led to James Chadwick losing his life.”
Yesterday, police remained outside the block of flats at Holland Street where Mr Chadwick’s body was found. It is understood he had been living there since February.
A major investigation unit van sat in front of the door, while numerous police cars were parked along the cobbles of the quiet road.
Officers carried out door-to-door inquiries over the weekend and gathered CCTV footage from the area to help them try to piece-together Mr Chadwick’s last movements.
A police spokesman confirmed that no one had been taken into custody yet, nor charged.
He said the key to the investigation at this stage was to explore Mr Chadwick’s last movements.
As news of the police investigation emerged, one friend, Dawn Jenkins, said: “RIP James, you will be missed by a lot of people.”
Lorna Mckenzie added: “You were a great guy, I still can’t believe it.
“You will always be my friend and in my thoughts.”
Janet Wri said: “I’m too sad for words. Love you loads and loads.”
Marie Sim said: “Such a cruel way to go – James wouldn’t hurt a soul.”
Meanwhile, Jade Gibson, said: “Such a shame. Was one of a kind. Couldn’t have met a nicer man if you tried. RIP James.”
Tributes were also paid by the staff at the Market Arms pub, off Market Street in the city centre, where Mr Chadwick had been a regular.
“Our thoughts go out to his family,” one worker said.
Police have urged anyone with information to contact then on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
