A new production written by Scotland’s makar is coming to the north-east.
Liz Lochhead, the country’s national poet, has penned What Goes On, which will be performed at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen at the end of the month.
The play tells the story of two actors who are involved in a theatre production of La Monde, a 19th-century production which was controversial at the time due to its sexual and moral themes.
During rehearsals, the characters end up involved in their own romantic relationship.
Last night the literary icon said she was “delighted” the tour would be stopping in the Granite City.
She added: “I know the Lemon Tree well, it’s a great venue, I’ve performed there myself before.
“I think there’s such a hunger for theatre in Aberdeen and it’s a great setting for it.”
The 67-year-old also revealed she wrote some of the play – which she describes as “very funny” and “very sexy” – after performing in Banchory’s Woodend Barn in June.
She said: “I remember writing a bit of it in Banchory, after performing in the lovely barn.
“You can be quite high when you come off stage so I used that to help me write it on my iPad, while I was staying in a B&B.”
While the play reveals the behind-the-scenes world of the theatre, Ms Lochhead stressed everyone will be able to enjoy it.
She said: “There’s a lot of jokes that we (the cast and production team) will know about from our lives in the theatre, but it’s not something you will only enjoy if you know that world.
“I knew it was funny when I was writing it, but I didn’t realise how poignant it was as well until I saw the preview performance.”
What Goes On comes to The Lemon Tree on September 29.
