A farm worker has died following a tragic accident involving a combine harvester in the north-east.
Police confirmed the 71-year-old man died following the incident, at a farm in New Deer.
Emergency services – including fire crews and an air ambulance – were called to the scene at about 3pm.
Paramedics worked on the man for about an hour, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The farmer worker, was in a field behind New Deer’s Costcutter store when the incident happened just after 3pm yesterday.
Emergency services attended and worked on the man – who is believed to be local – for about an hour in the field.
Last night, the green machine remained in the middle of the field, with crops still mid-way through the conveyor.
The wheels of the Claas Tucano 430 had been covered in plastic coating, and a police officer guarded the scene.
One woman, whose home backs onto the sloping field where the incident took place, said: “It was just at the back of the house from us, we saw the police up taking photographs, we had just come home when it happened.
“He may have fallen under the wheel.”
Another woman, who lives nearby, said: “There were an awful lot of flashing lights and movements.
“It must have been very serious for the helicopter ambulance to come, but I didn’t see exactly what happened.”
A spokeswoman for the fire service confirmed their first responder unit had attended, but that a full crew had not been required.
