Taxpayers have been hit with a bill of thousands of pounds to remove trees from an Aberdeen community that were “slowly killed over a period of time”.
Police appealed for information last night after five large oaks and one smaller tree were deliberately damaged in Bridge of Don.
They were targeted on the foot path between Jesmond Road and Jesmond Avenue.
Constable Richard Arton said: “This is a disappointing act that someone has committed and it would be impossible to replace such old, long-standing trees.
“Additionally, the cost to the public for removing the trees is extremely substantial.”
Sheila Young, the chairwoman of the Bridge of Don community council, said: “This is quite shocking news, and I hope that the police find out who is responsible as soon as possible.”
