An Aberdeen man walked free from court yesterday after he was cleared of assaulting his former partner and speeding in the city.
Greg Robertson denied seven charges when he appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday.
The 26-year-old was accused of assaulting his former partner Leanne Patterson during a dispute at his home last August.
Mr Robertson was also accused of speeding away from police on Muirend Road, continuing onto the northbound carriageway of A90 Aberdeen to Dundee road and Wellington Road in October last year, while banned from the roads.
However during yesterday’s trial, the Crown withdrew the assault charges after hearing evidence from Ms Patterson.
Giving evidence about the police chase, Constables Connor McKeen and Michael Urquhart both said they had seen Mr Robertson speed past them in a black Renault Megane while out on routine patrol on October 10 last year.
But defence agent Christopher Maitland argued their evidence was unreliable, as there were “stark” differences in their recollection of events.
Constable Derek Thow, of the roads policing team, also told the court he pursued a black car along from the Portlethen junction of the A90 into Aberdeen, after he was alerted to the speeding car by the police control room.
But Mr Maitland said there was insufficient evidence that this was the same car as the one witnessed by the other two officers.
Sheriff Alison Stirling acquitted Mr Robertson, of 23 Westerton Crescent, and said it would be “dangerous” to convict him of the dangerous driving charge.
She said she was “concerned” at the differences in the accounts given by constables McKeen and Urquhart, and said there was insufficient evidence to support the Crown’s claim that Constable Thow had pursued the same vehicle.
However, she did fine Mr Robertson £150 for failing to appear at the court on March 12.
