An amateur football team in the north-east is planning to create an all-weather sports facility in its tiny village.
Mormond Thistle Football Club unveiled its plans last week, and is now appealing to local businesses and people to help fund the project.
The club, which plays in the Scottish Welfare League, has branded the opportunity as a “very positive and exciting proposal”.
Under the plans, the team want to redevelop the “redundant and unsafe” tennis courts in the village, and turn them into a sports facility that can be used by locals and the wider community.
Club member John Murison said: “There is currently no all-weather outdoor facilities within the village which are able to service sporting organisations in outlying villages.
“Other local outdoor facilities have playing surfaces only conductive to playing football. Our project hopes to address the situation.”
The sports centre would provide a playing surface able to host hockey, tennis, netball and and basketball year round.
It would also be free to use for the local primary school for both curriculum activities and the prospect of establishing after-school clubs.
Appealing to businesses to help secure funding to move the project forward, Mr Murison said that the inclusive approach of the facility would also “benefit the sustainability of the community managed Ritchie Hall”.
The hall, used for local groups and events, re-opened last year after a £240,000 refurbishment which extended and improved its toilet, shower and changing facilities for sports teams.
“If your company can help support our project and indeed assist the effort to deliver a lasting sporting legacy in Strichen by making a contribution in a way that fits with your company’s business ethics, either by becoming a partner or sponsor, we would be delighted to work with you,” Mr Murison added.
