An Aberdeen fish and chip shop is in the running to be crowned the UK’s best new chipper.
Sea Salt and Sole, based at Dyce’s Station Road, has made it to the semi-final round of judging for the Best Newcomer award at the National Fish and Chip Awards 2016.
The family-run business, which only opened last November, is now the only Scottish nominee left among 10 semi-finalists from across the UK.
So far the business has been judged highly for its innovation, promotions and sustainability.
Owner Rikki Pirie, a chef of more than 20 years, said the takeaway will need to do all it can to tip the scales in its favour.
He said: “It’s obviously fantastic to get this far, we’re really happy because we’re the only shop in Scotland, which is great.
“We’ve not even been open a year yet, so it’s a great achievement.”
With previous winners including Frankie’s Fish and Chips in Shetland and The Bay in Stonehaven, the annual awards highlight and promote good practice and high quality in the fish and chips industry.
Mr Pirie added: “I think our approach of taking chef training into a fish and chip environment, trying different things and having a varied menu helped us a lot.
“We try and run the business as best as we possibly can, and source all our ingredients responsibly, and fingers crossed we get to the final three at the awards ceremony next year.”
The winner will be announced early next year.
