Multimillion pound plans to develop and extend two north-east harbours have been described as the “shot in the arm” the region needs.
A masterplan for the future of Macduff harbour and Banff marina will be presented to Aberdeenshire councillors next week.
The document was drawn up following industry consultation in the area, and presents a range of ideas to modernise the two ports.
Up to £326,500 could be spent in Banff over a five year period to extend the boat compound and add beach showers.
The plan also includes proposals to develop a combined cafe, shop and cultural facility at the marina.
Plans for neighbouring Macduff – which could run to more than £4.6million – are focused on expanding the infrastructure for fishing vessels and improving tourism links with the award-winning local aquarium.
A further £20million could also be earmarked to increase the vessel capacity of the port over the next two decades.
Last night Conservative MEP Ian Duncan said he welcomed the masterplan.
Mr Duncan, the party’s fisheries spokesman, said: “These are very exciting and ambitious plans and could be a vital shot in the arm economy of the Banff and Macduff area.
“I hope that Aberdeenshire Council will study the plans closely and recognise the huge potential they have.”
Those thoughts were echoed by Banffshire and Buchan coast MSP Stewart Stevenson who said the plans – if implemented – could revitalise the two towns.
“Banffshire is already recognised as having one of the most stunning coastlines in the world,” the SNP MSP said.
“I welcome these proposals to develop Banff and Macduff harbours which would not only see a boost to the local economy it could allow greater access to, and encourage further development opportunities in the area.”
Council infrastructure boss Stephen Archer stressed that while the masterplan contains investment ideas, “there is no commitment to fund any of the proposed interventions” at this stage.
Members of the Banff and Buchan area committee will be asked to comment on the raft of proposals, and prioritise which ideas to take forward, when they meet on Tuesday. The report will then be by the infrastructure committee.
