Residents of Aberdeen are being asked to donate their old sports balls as part of a campaign to get youngsters playing outside.
Aberdeen City Council announced earlier this summer it would be removing all of its signs prohibiting ball games from across the city by next August in a move to encourage children to exercise outside.
Now environmental group Aberdeen Greenspace has launched a campaign to collect old sports balls for underprivileged children so they can also enjoy the fun.
The appeal includes footballs, rugby balls, tennis balls and even beach balls, which will be given to needy youngsters and their families that can’t afford them.
Aberdeen Greenspace chief executive Michelle Herd said: “Taking down these signs will encourage children and their families to get out into the fresh air and play freely in Aberdeen’s parks and public spaces.
“The ball appeal will help enable this by providing children and their families with balls which they can then go out and play with.
“We are looking for all types of sports balls for the appeal except – for safety reasons – golf balls.
“By donating a ball to the appeal, people will help encourage youngsters to go and play outside, get some fresh air and exercise, and ultimately improve their health, fitness and well-being.”
Balls can be donated to the Cash for Kid’s offices in West Tullos between 9.30am and 5.30pm from Monday-Friday. The final date for donations is November 6.
