A controlled explosion was carried out at around 9.25am. The area around the Beach Esplanade was again closed off so the team could carry out the dramatic removal, but should reopen soon. Yesterday a member of the public informed the police that they had found the device, belived to be a German mine, at 3.40pm yesterday Beach Esplanade was closed from the roundabout with The Beach Ballroom, the junction with Park Road and the junction with King Street. It was reopened at around 8.15pm with the section of the beach where the device was found, being guarded by police overnight. This is the moment the device was set off.
