People in Aberdeen will get the chance to watch one of Scotland’s most famous novels – set in the heart of the north-east – come alive next month.
Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s ‘Sunset Song’ has been transformed into a film starring former model Agyness Deyn as heroine, Chris Guthrie.
The book was penned and published by the author – who grew up in the Howe of the Mearns at Laurencekirk – more than 80 years ago.
And the film has stayed faithful to the author’s roots, with scenes shot on location in Aberdeenshire last year, as well as in New Zealand.
The movie was premiered at the London Film Festival earlier this year and will now be unveiled at the Belmont Filmhouse on Wednesday, November 11.
‘Sunset Song’ was released in 1932 and is widely regarded as one of the most important Scottish novels of the 20th century.
It was made into a TV series in 1971, and in 2005 was named the best Scottish book at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
It tells the tale of the eldest daughter of a farming family – played by Deyn – in the fictional estate of Kinraddie, situated in The Mearns.
After her father suffers a stroke and her mother dies, she is forced to look after her family.
Later on, her husband is sent to fight in the Second World War.
The film was screened in Aberdeenshire, New Zealand and Luxembourg.
A spokeswoman for the film’s distributors, Hurriance Producers, said: “Sunset Song is an epic in emotional scale and deeply romantic at its core.”
Tickets for the Aberdeen showing will go on sale on Tuesday.
