Police are appealing for witnesses after a fire broke out in the bin room of a block of flats in Torry last night.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 6pm after flames were seen coming out of the building at Farquhar Avenue.
The Scottish Fire & Rescue Service sent two units to the scene – one from Central and another from Altens.
Upon their arrival, they discovered the bin room was “well ablaze” and the flats had been evacuated.
Speaking at the scene, watch manager Gary Chalmers said it took around 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze.
He confirmed noone had been hurt.
“We used the hose-reel jet to bring the fire under control, which we were able to do within half an hour,” he said.
“By the time this was done smoke had spread to the communal area of the building, so firefighters used breathing apparatuses to clean up the remainder of the building.”
Last night, police appealed for information as they revealed they were treating the fire as “potentially suspicious”.
A police spokesman said: “We believe this may have been an incident of wilful fireraising and would appeal to anyone with information to get in touch on 101.”
First floor resident Gosia Kot said numerous fires had taken place in the building before.
“I moved here ten years ago and there have been three fires from the bin room in that time. It’s an easy area for people to get into,” she said.
“The first I heard of it was when my neighbour knocked on my door to tell me there was a fire in the bin room – we had to get out.”
