Investigators probing a fire at a luxury holiday resort that killed an Aberdeen man have passed the case on to a specialist Crown Office unit.
Jamie McLennan died in the blaze at a Piperdam Golf and Leisure Resort, near Dundee, last month.
The 26-year-old’s body was found in the lodge the day after the fire broke out, and it took two weeks for him to be formally identified.
Forensic officers spent days on site removing evidence in the aftermath of the blaze but have so far been unable to ascertain what started the fire – or whether it was done so deliberately.
Now the investigation has now been passed onto the Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit.
Run by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, the unit was set up in 2012 and is responsible for investigating all sudden, suspicious, accidental and unexplained deaths.
A Crown Office spokesman said: “The procurator fiscal has received a report in connection with the death of a 26-year-old male in Fowlis, Dundee, on September 26 2015.
“The investigation into the death, under the direction of Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit (SFIU), is ongoing and the family will be kept updated in relation to any significant developments.”
Mr McLennan – who was described as a “legend” by his distraught friends and family – sparked a police search after going missing after a night out with friends in Dundee.
He was last seen getting into a taxi near a casino at about 3.30am on September 24, just four hours before the blaze that claimed his life happened.
It is understood he had been staying with two registered guests at the resort, although neither of them were inside at the time of the fire.
After the tragedy, loved ones of Mr McLennan – who was known as Gebo to his friends – said he would “never be forgotten”.
Cousin Clarke McLennan said that all the posts online proved what a “legend” Mr McLennan was, and wrote: “You will never ever be forgotten and we will never find anyone anything like you Jamie.”
Other cases investigated by the SFIU included a probe into a crash in Aberdeen that killed Steven Reiach and his fiancee Dawn Watson in April. The Crown Office did not bring any charges after concluding their investigation.
