Council chiefs have approved a £150,000 boost to create faster internet services in some of Aberdeen’s poorest areas.
The project will deliver free wi-fi in the “northern regeneration area” of the city – defined as Middlefield, parts of Northfield, Woodside and Tillydrone.
Existing Aberdeen City Council infrastructure in the area, like lighting columns and buildings, will be used to deliver the quick service.
After two years, any infrastructure built by the contract bidder will be taken over by the local authority.
The free internet will be provided in six venues – Aberdeen Lads Club, Northfield library, Henry Rae Community Centre, Cummings Park Community Centre, the Printfield project and Tillydrone community flat.
Councillors on the communities, housing and infrastructure committee yesterday agreed to the project.
Convener Neil Cooney said: “This a good news story and will provide a valuable boost to these areas.”
