Hundreds of cyclists raised £14,000 for youngsters with terminal illnesses during an event in Aberdeenshire at the weekend.
Cyclists took to the byways and mountains of Aberdeenshire on Saturday in memory of toddler Kayleigh Cordiner, who died of a brain tumour aged two.
Her parents Jonathan and Anna Cordiner set up Kayleigh’s Wee Stars in her memory, and fundraise to ensure families of children with terminal illnesses can enjoy precious time together.
The third annual cycle ride challenged participants to take on either the 20-mile, 60-mile or 90-mile treks which start and end in Ballater – the longest of which took in the mighty Cairn O’Mount.
Other fundraising efforts including a raffle were held and contributed to the total – which was higher than last year’s £13,000 tally.
Mr and Mrs Cordiner, of Oldmeldrum, stopped working so they could make their daughter’s last few months as special as possible after she was diagnosed on Boxing Day, 2011. She died just six months later.
He added: “We had a fantastic day, we had about 200 cyclists. We don’t charge for the event, we just ask people to make a donation.
“One of the main successes of the event was the fact it caters for everyone really. There was a broad range of abilities – it was a fantastic achievement.
“A lot of the cyclists were saying of all the sportives they have done this year it is one of the most challenging.”
