An Aberdeenshire school is in the running for a prestigious national accolade thanks to its work with local employers.

Portlethen Academy could pick up a gong at the British Chamber of Commerce Awards in London on November 26 in recognition of its collaboration with local firms.

It has been nominated in the Education and Business Partnership Award category alongside high schools and colleges across the UK.

The school recently won Scotland’s Chamber of Commerce Education Business Partnership Award.

The campus has retained strong links to companies including Maersk Oil and Hydrasun throughout the years, and recently created the Portlethen Partnership Industry Team.

Chief executive of Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, Robert Collier, said: “This award recognises schools and further education colleges that engage effectively with business and Portlethen Academy should be justly proud of its achievement.

“Helping pupils understand the world of work and develop the crucial employability skills is vital to the future success of our region and the next generation of its workforce.”

Portlethen councillor, and chairwoman of Aberdeenshire Council’s education, learning and leisure committee, Alison Evison, said: “I congratulate Portlethen Academy on receiving this prestigious award in recognition of the work the school has undertaken to create links with employers and provide progressive career opportunities for young people.”

Portlethen Academy head teacher, Neil Morrison, added: “Parents are aware that their children gain an excellent awareness of the world of work through the strength of the links we have made here at the school and I thank our partners for helping us gain this award and look forward to the final.”
