Residents have raised concerns after a tent popped up in a grassy area of the city centre between two schools.
Police have been made aware of the tent, where a homeless person is understood to be sleeping, in a small park next on Skene Street.
Community members have sent worried letters to local councillor Bill Cormie highlighting that the campsite, which appeared at some point earlier this week, lies between Gilcomstoun Primary School and Aberdeen Grammar School.
Mr Cormie said: “I’ve had several constituents on to me now about this tent.
“I’ve asked Aberdeen City Council officers to look into this matter, as well as local police officers.
“‘It’s obviously not a place that should be used for setting up tents, and there’s a pressing concern that it’s right next to the primary school, and with the grammar school nearby, there’s the potential for anti-social behaviour.”
Earlier this year, an illicit encampment on the railway turntable just yards from the city’s historic Union Terrace Gardens was cleared after the Press and Journal exposed drug-taking going on there.
The site was strewn with used needles and discarded alcohol containers, and took a large effort to clean up.
Mr Cormie added: “We don’t want this to become something similar to what happened at the turntable on Union Terrace, where there was 110 needles picked up, so there’s a potential for it to be a bigger problem.”
One resident, who lives immediately next to the grassy area, said: “The guy is obviously down on his luck, and needs a place to spend the night. So long as there’s no trouble it’s not bothering us.”
Susan Montgomerie, chief executive of the nearby Aberdeen Cyrenians, said: “At this point in time I am not aware of this person, but that is not to say that some of our staff might be, but I will make it a priority to check if anybody knows who this is, and to see what we can put in place to help.
“We can offer a whole range of support services for people who are homeless from a very practical level, so if there is somebody there and they need our assistance we would be only to happy to offer it.”
A police spokeswoman said: “Officers will look into the report of an encampment on Skene Street and establish the circumstances of it being there.
“Partner agencies such as Aberdeen City Council and the environmental health department may be made aware should it be required.”
The owner of the tent was not available for comment.
