Police are still attempting to trace an “opportunistic” thief who stole hundreds of pounds from a pensioner who was lying injured on an Aberdeen street.
The Press and Journal offered £1,000 to anyone who could help trace the culprit who targeted the 71-year-old after he tripped and fell just feet away from his Torry home.
The incident horrified people living in the city as a major police investigation was launched.
But, almost four months later, the perpetrator has so far managed to escape justice.
Members of the public called the emergency services on July 20 after finding the pensioner injured and clearly in pain.
He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance where doctors discovered he had a broken leg.
It is understood the thief saw him fall and stopped – but rather than help him he stole his wallet, containing what police described as a “mid three-figure sum”.
The man is described as being white, about 5ft10 and of average build.
He was wearing a white crew neck jumper and blue jeans at the time of the incident, which happened at public stairs between Farquhar Road and Girdleness Road. .
Police described the theft as an “opportunistic crime”.
A crowdfunding campaign was set up in the days after the offence to reimburse the victim, which raised more than £1,600.
Last night, Torry councillor Alan Donnelly urged anyone with information to come forward.
He added: “This was a despicable act – to rob an injured and elderly man. The bottom line is, this is not acceptable in our society.
“We need to find the person responsible so the courts can make an example of them to show others that we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour.
“The culprit should have helped him, and instead, he chose to take advantage and steal from him.
“They should be totally ashamed of themselves.”
Anyone with information which could help police with their inquiries should contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
