A student has been ordered to pay compensation to a barman after he got drunk downing six bottles of wine and threw his glass across a pub.
Martin Devine appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday and admitted acting in a culpable and reckless manner on May 8 this year.
The 23-year-old had been drinking with friends in Siberia in Belmont Street during the evening and was “extremely intoxicated” by around 9.55pm.
The court heard that, without warning, Devine picked up the wine glass and threw it towards the bar.
The glass struck John Murray – who was no injured – and shattered on the floor.
The court heard that witnesses quickly identified Devine as the culprit and he was taken out of the city-centre bar by door stewards.
Police were then called and he was cautioned and arrested.
The university student’s agent, solicitor Gregor Kelly, said his client could not remember any of the incident.
He said that when he viewed CCTV footage from the night he accepted his irresponsible behaviour.
Mr Kelly said that Devine had recently separated from his girlfriend and on the night of the incident he had been informed that she was in hospital.
When he called to try to arrange to see her, her parents refused to let him visit.
Mr Kelly said this was the reason he had been upset and had been attempting to drown his sorrows by consuming about six bottles of wine.
Sheriff Alison Stirling told Devine, of 19C Marischal Street, Aberdeen, he was fortunate the consequences of his actions had not been more serious.
She ordered that he pay Mr Murray £750 in compensation at the rate of £75 a month.
