New tourism group to lure in visitors to north-east corner

A new-look tourism group is aiming to put a north-east town back on the map and cash in on holiday makers.

The Fraserburgh Area Tourism Group has reformed with Lynda McGuigan at its helm.

The manager of the local Museum of Scottish Lighthouses – already a popular destination for visitors to the port – has now set out a plan to keep tourists in the area for longer and make the town stand out against better-known destinations.

She said: “What we want to do is show people that this area is really attractive and that we can provide what is necessary.

“One of the things that I’ve noticed is that some of the coaches that come in to the museum don’t seem to have any local knowledge. The result of that is that one poor driver was taken by a German tour guide down to Crovie, which is a bit difficult for a bus to get around.

“Local knowledge is really what we’re trying to promote. It’s easy to just drive along the A90, and unless we can get this knowledge out there I don’t think we’re going to get people to come.”

Ms McGuigan added the group would also be encouraging more local businesses to become recognised by WorldHost Customer Service, which was used during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Businesses would need to train half of their staff through the programme to become part of the scheme.

Half of the museum’s staff trained for the qualification over the summer.

The tourism group also plans to create a new website to promote local attractions.

“We’re putting together itineraries with all the things that people can do in the area,” Ms McGuigan added.

“With a visitor attraction opening in Peterhead’s old prison, I think it’s very viable to pull people around the coast. We have plenty of other attractions in the area and enough accommodation for people to find.”

Score International bought the Victorian jail in Peterhead after the new £140m HMP Grampian facility was opened last year.

It hopes to convert the facility into a training centre and museum detailing the history of the prison once dubbed Scotland’s “hate factory”.
