Hundreds of youngsters helped to cut the ribbon at the opening of a new multi-million-pound Aberdeen school.
Brimmond School has been built on the site of the former Netherhills School in Bucksburn.
The £12m facility amalgamated Netherhills and Bucksburn schools on a bigger site to accommodate the growing school-age population in the area.
There are currently 271 pupils attending the school, with 80 nursery children also educated at the facility.
Construction started on the new school in April 2014.
Yesterday, Aberdeen City Council leader, Jenny Laing, joined pupils and staff in formally opening the school.
Ms Laing said: “When we came into administration in 2012, we said that education would be our top priority.
“I think through developments like Brimmond School, we have shown it’s top of our agenda.
“Now, the pupils and staff have a wonderful 21st-century learning environment in which to go forward.”
Michelle McKay, head teacher, described the new building as “fantastic”.
She said: “Everyone has settled in really well – the space itself makes such a huge difference. Instead of everyone being crammed in side by side, they have room.
“It has also been important for us to have the nursery pupils integrated with the school, and there’s even part of the playground where they can play with the primary one pupils.”
The school boasts an adventure playground, woodland wildlife area, cycle track, basketball and netball courts and an all-weather, 3G sports pitch.
There are also terraced areas on the first floor which can be used as outdoor classrooms.
And the outdoor facilities are among the most popular features at the new amenity among the pupils.
P7 pupil, Cooper Smith, 10, said: “I like the astro-turf pitch, it’s great that we’ve halved the pitch so you can play football on one side and other games at the same time.”
Another of the P7s, Michelle Ezek, 10, added: “My favourite bit is the balcony, there’s a lot of learning space – it’s better than being in a stuffy classroom all the time.”
