Buchan man rewriting the Christmas story for new song

A Buchan man has rewritten the story of Christmas to compose a new song for his local church.

David Haggath, from Peterhead, had been asked to sing at the port’s Apex Church at a festive event, but realised he had run out of new material.

The 43-year-old singer came up with the “modern take” on the classics in his car – and received rave reviews from locals.

Now he has released the track, called No Ordinary Night, to the wider public in the hope it can bring some festive cheer.

Mr Haggath, who has been performing for more than 20 years, said: “I was asked by the church if I would sing, but I didn’t have any new songs, so I started writing it in the car and when I got home I recorded it.

“It’s a modern take on the Christmas story. It’s not like a Christmas carol, but it is the same nativity story.

“The whole theme is that God came to be with us.”

Mr Haggath learned to play the trumpet as a child, before moving on to guitar and keyboard.

He plays in the Apex Church’s own band as well as taking on duties as its worship director.

He released a full-length album earlier this year entitled Origins, an instrumental take on the first chapter of Genesis.

“I’ve been involved with music my whole like,” he said.

“Predominantly now I play guitar and the keyboard, and I’ve been doing it in church since I was about seven. It’s part of modern worship.”

Amazed by the reaction his new festive song got, Mr Haggath made the decision to release it online to buy.

It is available to download on iTunes and Spotify, and can also be listened to for free, up to three times, on streaming site Bandcamp.
