We’ve all heard of firemen rescuing cats stuck up a tree.
But the cliche was turned on its head yesterday with Aberdeen firefighters coming to the aid of a dog stuck under a tree.
One appliance was dispatched from North Anderson Drive at 3.45pm to reports of a small Jack Russell stuck under the roots of a tree in the city’s Seaton Park.
Owner Angela Baigrie had taken her pets Toby and Buddy out for a walk in the city green space when the curious pair went down a large hole beneath the roots of a tree.
But while Buddy emerged from the deep hole Toby was less forthcoming.
It was then a worried Miss Baigrie phoned the SSPCA.
An officer came out and tried to use a swan hook to rescue the mutt but to no avail.
The fire service was then called and using “small gear” they rescued the pooch at around 4.30pm and reunited it to a delighted Miss Baigrie.
Last night she said she had “feared for the worst”.
She said: “It was a total nightmare.
“The fire brigade were digging and digging and I really worried about Toby.
“I’m so grateful they managed to rescue him.”
A fire service spokesman said: “We sent out one unit after the report.
“Firefighters used small gear to rescue it and it was freed at around 4.30pm.”
