Aberdeenshire Council could spend as much as £125,000 to upgrade Fraserburgh Academy’s roof and has launched a tender to find a suitable contractor. The work is part of routine improvements being made to the facility and would include upgrades to the high-level windows in the schools gym. A winner of the contract will be announced on December 30. In 2011, a large section of roofing over the school’s home economics department was torn off when hurricane-force winds swept through the north-east. The secondary was closed for two days while council engineers made repairs. A year later, a man scaled the roof to stage a six-hour protest to highlight the problems he had with benefit payments. At the top of the school’s science block, he unfurled a banner which read: “Starved and persecuted by the DHSS”. It had cost nearly £2,400 to have two fire service vehicles and an ambulance on standby at the school during the incident. Police negotiators were also deployed at the scene.
