Aberdeen University has launched a new scholarship to honour the man behind the success of one of the world’s biggest banks.
The university has launched the £99,000 study aid in partnership with HSBC, which was founded by former student Sir Thomas Sutherland in 1865.
The scholarship is open to students from India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, and will cover the cost of tuition fees, travel and maintenance for a four-year degree.
To qualify, applicants must be the first generation of their family to go to university and have a place on a course starting in September.
Professor Richard Wells, regional dean at the institution, said he was delighted to support the legacy of Sir Thomas and to partner with HSBC to create new opportunities for students.
He added: “Sir Thomas Sutherland is one of the university’s most famous former students, and we are delighted to join HSBC in this scholarship that honours the man who played such an instrumental role in the bank’s history.”
Prospective students are asked to send in an application alongside a video clip, no more than a minute long, outlining what a degree from Aberdeen University would mean to them.
HSBC has donated $150million (£99,137,503) to charities worldwide to mark 150 years in business with the Sir Thomas Sutherland scholarship being one of the beneficiaries.
