Council tax payers have footed a bill of almost £15,000 for cleaning up mess left by travellers at an Aberdeen park.
An encampment which recently vacated a parking area in Hazelhead Park dumped “tons of refuse” according to a local councillor.
Staff spent several hours clearing away building materials, discarded equipment, as well as human waste.
The operation, which cost £14,837, was carried out in the car park beside the Joe Paterson Pavilion.
Hazelhead councillor Martin Greig said: “The car park has been invaded regularly. I have asked the council to instal some means of restricting or preventing them from entering this location again. Almost £15,000 is an incredible amount of public money to spend on clearing up after this group.”
His thoughts were echoed by fellow ward councillor Jennifer Stewart who added: “The park is for everyone to enjoy. These annual encampments have always caused concern in the local community.
“We will keep fighting to protect and enhance the attractive environment of Hazlehead. I want to make sure that travellers know that unauthorised encampments are not welcome there.”
