John Swinney has announced work on the Haudagain Roundabout will begin next year.
The finance secretary said that progress on the Aberdeen bypass meant work to improve the infamous bottle neck could now get underway.
The £30 million works, expected to begin next year, will bring relief to commuters who use the nightmare junction – a regular scene of traffic jams.
Mr Swinney said he was “pleased to announce” that the works would get underway.
Transport chiefs have claimed the planned changes at the roundabout will cut delays by half.
It is estimated that the dual carriageway linking North Anderson Drive and Auchmill Road will take two years to build.
Mr Swinney said: “I can announce today that new projects are now also able to proceed.
“In light of the excellent progress on the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route, I am today confirming that work will begin in 2016-17 on the improvements to the Haudagain roundabout.”
The works were originally scheduled to start at the end of 2017 with the completion of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route.
