Storm Frank: A month’s rainfall in 24 hours for Aberdeenshire village

Wide areas of of the north-east saw well over a month’s worth of rain fall in a less than a day during Storm Frank’s rampage.
Average monthly rainfall for Braemar in December is 75mm (2.9in) however in the space of 24 hours, as the country braced itself against the storm, a whopping 77mm (3in) fell in the area.
Braemar is known for it’s weather anomalies but it wasn’t even the worst hit in Scotland.
Tyndrum, on the West Highland Way, was drenched with 88.6mm (3.4in) over the day.
The area around Balmoral saw rainfall of 59.8mm (2.3in) and Aboyne received a soaking of 41.2mm (1.6in).
Low lying ground around Aberdeen escaped the worst of the weather with Craibstone registering 17mm (0.6in) and Aberdeen International Airport 14.4mm (0.5in).
A Met Office, spokesperson confirmed weather would be calmer today but warned of rain this evening.
The spokesperson added: “It will be nothing like the level we’ve seen with Storm Frank thank goodness – I think we’ve all had enough.
“When the bells ring at midnight it should be mostly dry and clear, with the chance of a fluttering of snow in the mountains.”
