A leading Aberdeen councillor has called for an urgent meeting with Finance Secretary John Swinney after devastating floods hit the city.
Willie Young also praised the work of council employees in his letter to the SNP minister.
The Scottish Government has announced more than £12million will be made available to help affected areas.
But Mr Young believes the government must look at long-term action that can be taken to stop more flooding in future.
The council’s finance convener says in his letter: “Aberdeen is blessed with two rivers, the Dee and the Don, and it is most unusual for both these rivers to burst their banks at the same time as happened on January 7.
“I am sure you will agree that it is in no one’s interest for us to deal with floods on a yearly basis when, if we work together, we can come up with a plan to defend areas that are susceptible to flooding. ”
A Scottish Government spokesman said: “On Saturday, the first minister announced new funding of over £12million will be made available to help areas affected by severe weather across Scotland – including Aberdeen.
“The £12million funding is in addition to the £4million announced by the deputy first minister (Mr Swinney) in his budget statement, bringing the total package of support to over £16million.
“An extra £5.8million will be made available to support households and business properties affected by flooding.
“The funding will be used by local authorities to provide every household, business premises or charity directly affected by flood water with a grant of £1,500.”
