The chairman of an Aberdeenshire committee yesterday paid tribute to the efforts of his community following devastating floods in the region last week.
Chairman of the Garioch area committee, Fergus Hood, said he had been moved by the “community resilience” on show across Kintore, Port Elphinstone and the wider Garioch area after Thursday’s flooding.
However, although he welcomed the Scottish Government’s £12million of funding to flood victims, he said it “remains to be seen” if the £2million given to Aberdeenshire Council will be enough to help deal with the repairs across the area.
East Garioch councillor Mr Hood said the flooding had not been limited to the larger towns of Kintore and Inverurie, with the likes of Kemnay also affected.
He helped bring in thousands of clothing and cleaning products offered up by Asda in Dyce to people affected in the Garioch area at the weekend.
Mr Hood added: “It hasn’t been a good start to the year for a number of residents who had suffered as a result of this horrendous weather we have had in the Garioch area and wider parts of Aberdeenshire.
“There was tremendous community spirit and there has been tremendous community resilience and cooperation between local folk and the council, police and fire services. A number of people and businesses that have come forward to help.
“It is so good that we have got a community that is so willing to help.”
