A north-east volunteer has raised more than double her goal for a storm-hit animal sanctuary through a unique fundraising drive.
Eilidh Haggart, of Potterton, said she was “overwhelmed” to have generated more than £1,500 for the New Arc centre within the space of just one week – by offering people the chance to design her next tattoo.
She had set herself the aim of raising £700 by the end of the month.
The Auchnagatt animal sanctuary was left with a £10,000 bill after Storm Frank wreaked havoc on a mobile home which housed its 39 cats and several aviaries.
Upset by the news, Miss Haggart embarked upon a unique fundraising venture – asking people to come up with ideas and designs for her next tattoo in exchange for a donation to the New Arc of £7 or more.
The 24-year-old will fund the tattoo out of her own pocket, with every penny raised going to the animal charity, which is run by Keith and Pauline Marley.
Miss Haggart works at Thistle Windows in Aberdeen, but volunteers for the New Arc.
She said: “I am still in utter disbelief at the amount that has been raised so far, thanks to friends, family and complete strangers.
“Every time I check my Just Giving page, it gives me the biggest smile.
“My original target was £700. I didn’t even think I’d hit that, so £1500-plus is just so overwhelming.
“I’m grateful for every single penny, and so is the New Arc. I started this fundraiser with just the view of my friends on Facebook being the target audience.
“I figured they would really love the chance to embarrass me while helping a good cause. I certainly didn’t expect it to become as popular as it has done.
“It’s reaching so many people I don’t even know. I’ve received countless donations from people I’ve never met.”
She added: “There have been a lot of animal-themed designs, some quotes, drawings people have done, music-themed designs, an Aberdeen FC chant, it’s really such a mixed bag.”
