Two Buchan secondary schools have been praised by councillors for helping to boost pupil attainment.
Alan Hornberry from Mintlaw Academy and Gavin Morrison from Peterhead Academy appeared before the Buchan area committee yesterday to field questions about pupil performance.
Attainment has broadly improved in the two academies over the past year, and councillors were full of praise for staff and pupils.
The increase in pupils leaving school for “positive destinations” – further education, higher education, apprenticeships, or full employment – was welcomed.
Councillor Norman Smith said: “We’re all very impressed with the improvements that have been made.”
Mr Morrison, representing Peterhead Academy, said the school is going “in the right direction”.
He added: “The strategies we’ve put in place are working and we hope to see more of the same.”
Councillor Alan Buchan – who has been a vocal critic of poor attainment at Peterhead Academy in the past – said: “I’m a lot happier than I usually am. Keep up the good work, and hopefully in the next three or four years we’ll catch up with Mintlaw.”
And Councillor Alan Gardiner added: “Rome wasn’t built in a day – we asked you to do something, you’ve done it, and I welcome the results.”
