Union Street could soon reap the rewards of a multimillion-pound investment in the heart of Aberdeen city centre.
The Granite Mile has been earmarked as one of the key areas which could benefit from potential funding worth £6.5million.
The pledge came from Aberdeen Inspired at the launch of a ballot to vote the organisation in for a second term.
Local firms, who pay a levy, now have the chance to decide who will steer the city’s business improvement district for the next five years.
The organisation has urged levy-payers to help make its proposals into a reality, which will mean about £1.3m is injected into the city annually.
Included in these proposals will be a “major spring cleaning” of Union Street.
Gary Craig, chief executive, said: “Businesses have said they want to see visible improvements carried out to Union Street.
“We will be looking at how we can help the council by looking at the seating provided, the cleanliness – so removing chewing gum, for example – basically, a major spring cleaning of the street.
“From there, we want to look at other areas of the city centre, we want to have something in the Castlegate, something in the Green, and other places.
“We’re looking at expanding and delivering an even better Christmas village by increasing the number of stalls, increasing the size of the ice rink so that we have something that’s exciting and brings a great festive atmosphere to the city.
“The idea is to keep it in Union Terrace, it was a real benefit to be able to keep everything together. ”
And one of the business owners who will be supporting Aberdeen Inspired’s bid said she shares the organisation’s vision for Union Street.
Julie Haig, of Haigs Food Hall, said she hopes the street can become vibrant once again.
She said: “I grew up in Aberdeen and I remember how it (Union Street) was back then.
“We moved to England for 12 years and I was shocked when I came back.
“There has to be something done to make it vibrant and buzzing again, the street’s still busy, but there’s so much that could be done to bring shops back here.”
The ballot closes on March 17.
