Organisers have given the Press and Journal assurances that the annual Aberdeen Torcher Parade will go ahead this year, despite declining numbers in recent years.
The event has been running for more than 120 years and is widely seen as being a feature in the city’s calendar.
But Holly Bruce, the charities officers at Aberdeen University, was advised by previous organisers not to go ahead with the event as attendance has fallen in the last decade.
But coming from Fraserburgh she says she appreciates the importance of the “unique” north-east event to the city.
She said: “I was recommended by the last three presidents not to ahead with the even as it’s a lot of work for little return.
“As someone who grew up in Fraserburgh I appreciate the importance and how it’s unique to Aberdeen.
“We’ve arranged for it to go ahead on March 19 and we will be raising money to 37 local charities.”
The event’s date has changed from Easter to March in recent years to make way for the exams.
