A north-east river will open tomorrow for the start of the fishing season.
Professional golfer Paul Lawrie will have the honour of blessing the River Deveron before hundreds of salmon fishers cast their lines into the water for another year.
But Craig Wyness will be the first to throw his hook into the river after being presented with his award for catching the largest fish last year.
The Morison Trophy, which he will receive for the second year in a row, is presented to the winner of season’s heaviest catch.
Last year, Mr Wyness, from Peterhead, caught a 30lb salmon while casting his line at Sheep’s Haugh Pool in Upper Netherdale.
He returned it to the water after posing for several impressive photographs for the family album.
Frank Henderson, a River Deveron warden and board member, said the catch was great news for the local fish population.
At the time, he said: “The Deveron has a record for fish between 20lb and 30lb. That is the biggest fish we have had in a long, long time. Given the circumstances we have had in recent years, that is a big fish.”
The trophy itself dates back to 1924 when a 61lb salmon was caught by Clementina Morison.
A spokesman for the Deveron, Bogie and Isla Rivers Trust trust said: “In winning the trophy, Mr Wyness shall also be presented with a Vision salmon fly-rod, sponsored by Turriff Tackle and Trophies.”
For releasing the fish, he will also be awarded with a limited edition fly box and a bottle of The Deveron whisky, courtesy of John Dewars & Sons Ltd.
The opening ceremony will take place at the Turriff Anglers Association lodge at 10am.
