The north-east’s children’s hospital has received a glowing report from inspectors.
Healthcare Improvement Scotland paid the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital an unannounced visit in December, and was particularly impressed with the cleanliness of the building and the relationship between staff and their young patients and families.
The report, released yesterday, found there were no areas which required improvement, and just one area of recommendation.
Inspectors highlighted “significant improvements” when compared with their previous visit three years ago.
Last night, hospital bosses welcomed the positive report and said it could not have been achieved without the “real team effort” from everyone involved at the facility.
Inspectors spoke with 21 patients and their relatives during their visit across various wards.
The respondents said they found there was a high standard of hygiene at the facility, with one describing it as “spotless”.
The inspection team also reported relatives and carers fully understood the importance of infection control through actions such as using hand gel when they enter the building.
The only recommendation made by inspectors was for hospital staff to improve their records for patients who had devices inserted into their bodies, to ensure best practice was being followed.
According to the report, senior management has already begun to tackle this issue.
Cameron Matthew, divisional general manager at the hospital, said: “We are delighted to receive this kind of recognition from inspectors. Being in hospital is never easy, especially for children, but, day in and day out, we see exemplary levels of commitment and dedication from staff in order to make it as comfortable and as welcoming as possible.
“While it’s great to see those efforts rewarded with such a glowing report, it’s important to stress that it isn’t just down to the hard work of staff. It’s a real team effort and the help and support we receive from parents, carers and our partners such as the ARCHIE Foundation plays a massive part.”
“While this report is really positive, we will not rest on our laurels. We know there are always areas that can be improved and we are committed to doing just that.”
