POLL: £200 million plans for Union Square expansion could create 2000 jobs

A multi-million pound expansion inspired by Aberdeen’s sea-faring history might be coming to the north-east’s largest shopping mall.
The owners of Union Square are seeking planning permission for a £200 million development that will reflect the iconic look of the harbour and showcase Aberdeen’s maritime heritage.
The expansion will be built into the current carpark and run along Market Street, creating a 1,000 space car park, 30 new retail outlets and a new 120 room hotel.
Construction will provide 1,000 jobs and the expansion will sustain 1,000 retail jobs.
The final design is yet to be determined but a recent public consultation gave the choice of a theme inspired by the Granite City and it’s harbour or Aberdeen’s maritime heritage with the local community preferring the latter.
Owners hope that work will start in early 2017 and completion by 2019.
