A north-east man has been fined for threatening to kill his girlfriend when she ended their relationship just hours after Valentine’s Day.
Liam Innes appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday and admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner at an address in the city’s Caroline Place after his partner announced she was breaking up with him.
The court heard that neighbours called the police after they feared for Laura Liehu’s safety when the 25-year-old threatened to kill her when she broke the news on Monday evening.
Innes also shouted and swore at her during the argument.
Fiscal depute, Jamie Dunbar, said: “The accused and the complainer had been in a relationship since approximately March last year. The relationship is now at an end.
“The accused and complainer were within the home when she told the accused she wanted to end the relationship. An argument ensued during which he said to the complainer ‘I’ll kill you’.
“This was overheard by a neighbour. The argument continued and, as I understand, the neighbours contacted the police.
“When the police arrived, I think it was calming at that stage. The complainer was crying and struggling to speak.”
Representing Innes, of 29 New Street, Buckie, solicitor advocate Iain Woodward-Nutt said: “He is now single, his relationship is over and, indeed, this incident marked the end of the relationship.
“He had been in this relationship for one year.
“This was quite simply an argument that got out of hand. I think it is fair to say this could be deemed to be a fairly non-event.”
Innes was fined £400 by Sheriff Alison Stirling.
