Officers in Aberdeen have charged two people following a spate of mobile phone thefts from pubs and clubs in the city-centre.
A 37-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman are expected to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court today (February 17, 2016) following the recovery of several devices at the weekend.
Numerous phones were stolen throughout December and January within various licensed premises in the centre of Aberdeen, including a theft from a nightclub in the early hours of Sunday (14 February, 2016).
A handbag was later recovered nearby and found to contain nine stolen handsets.
Working with police in Stafford-Shire, two suspects were eventually traced to a vehicle in the Stoke-On-Trent area.
The man has been charged in connection with the theft of 38 mobile phones, and the woman nine.
Chief Inspector Graeme Mackie, Area Commander for the South sector of Aberdeen, has reminded the public to always be on their guard.
He said: “The loss of personal data and memories contained within these devices comes at great cost – both emotionally and financially – to the victim of such a theft.
“Opportunistic thieves will be quick to take advantage of unattended mobile phones left on tables and bars, or unattended or open handbags and jackets. Putting your phone in the back pocket of your trousers is probably the easiest target of all.
“You would not leave hundreds of pounds unguarded when you are on a night out, and I would urge the public to treat their phones in the same way.
“The stress and trauma of mobile phone theft can be avoided by taking some simple steps – make sure you keep your phone in your hand or front pocket and never leave it unattended. If you keep it in a handbag, then keep your handbag with you, in sight and unopen.
“Do not make yourself an easy target. Please do not give someone the chance to steal your phone.”
If anyone has any concerns or reports about mobile phone thefts, they are urged to contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 if you wish to remain anonymous.
