The north-east is bracing for further snowfall today as subzero temperatures continue to grip the region.
A Met Office severe weather warning remains in place with forecasters warning of another wintry blast making its way across northern Aberdeenshire and possibly into the Granite City.
This morning “heavy” snow showers were expected across the region, likely to make its way to lower levels of the region, with temperatures of -5C possible.
The mercury did not rise above 3C in Aberdeen yesterday, with a low of -4C recorded in Aboyne in the early hours. The freezing conditions will persist today with ice also likely on roads and pavements.
Snow flurries were spotted all across the north-east yesterday, with Aberdeen, Turriff, Huntly, Ellon and Inverurie among the places hit.
And more of the white stuff was expected this morning, possibly even making its way to the ports of Peterhead and Fraserburgh in the wee hours.
It comes following two days of snowfall across Aberdeenshire, with a Met Office yellow warning for snow in place since Sunday night.
Yesterday, Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: “Overnight (from Tuesday to Wednesday) at Aberdeen Airport the temperature was recorded getting down to -0.4C and at Aboyne it got down to -4C.
“At Craibstone it was -1.1C. Aberdeen got to 3C Wednesday morning which was the highest of the day. This obviously reflects the cold spell we are currently in.”
He said the wintry showers affecting the Moray Firth and north Aberdeenshire would continue overnight into this morning, adding: “It is not outwith the realms of possibility that Aberdeen will see some snow.”
However, he said the cold snap might begin “to ease” later on today.
Mr Madge said: “We are expecting highs of 3C. It will be mainly sunny although there maybe some snow towards the north coast.
“On Friday temperatures will be around 3C but it is going to be cloudy, which will help keep the temperatures up.
“On Saturday temperatures will be up to around 4C so as we go into the weekend temperatures are getting milder.”
The Met Office’s overnight ice warning will remain in place until 10am today.
