Hero medics saved a football fan’s life after his heart stopped when his team scored a vital goal.
Stewart Walker collapsed in the South Stand at Pittodrie at the end of the Dons’ tense clash with St Johnstone.
The Saints fan had just watched his favourites snatch a draw with a late penalty when he suffered a suspected heart attack.
Fellow supporters were stopped from leaving the ground as an Aberdeen FC club doctor, members of the British Red Cross and ambulance staff went to his aid.
Mr Walker, who is understood to be in his early 60s and is believed to be from Dunfermline, was then taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance.
His son, Niall, said he wanted to thank the people who gave his father on-the-spot emergency treatment.
He said: “My dad Stewart’s life was saved at Pittodrie by a brilliant person who resuscitated after his heart stopped.
“He’s going to be ok. I’d like to thank them personally.”
One fan, who was yards away from Mr Walker when he collapsed, said: “The game had finished dramatically – St Johnstone scored a last-minute penalty to equalise and the match finished shortly after.
“But all the joy of the goal and a good result went pretty much immediately when we saw the man collapse.
“It was clearly extremely serious and the police and paramedics were straight in to assist.
“They were brilliant – they took control of the situation immediately and gave him the best treatment they could in the stands.
“It was one of those moments that really put the whole thing in perspective.”
Crowd doctor at Pittodrie, Stephen Wedderburn said it was a team effort and praised the work of the police, the ambulance staff, the first aid team, stewards and the St Johnstone fans.
“Everyone did their job well, it wasn’t just medical staff, it was a team effort in a wider sense,” he said.
“I would give special praise to the paramedic and ambulance staff – they were very professional and very slick.”
Scores of Dons fans have also praised the staff and wished Mr Walker a speedy recovery.
Derek Richardson said: “We saw the incident and the amount of prolonged effort that went into saving this man’s life, dropping points wasn’t in our minds at the end of the game. Well done to those involved.”
Saints fan Kathy Anderson also thanked the staff at the ground for their quick thinking.
And fellow St Johnstone fan Archie McLean hailed the medics as “heroes”.
“The stewards at the ground and the police were “excellent” he said.
“Great credit goes to them all from us Saintees. Best wishes to Stewart for a full and speedy recovery.”
An Aberdeen FC spokesman said everyone at the club was happy to hear the man was ok after the incident.
“From a club perspective if somebody collapses the medical team will swing into action and do all they can,” he said.
“I’m delighted to hear he is on the road to recovery.”
Meanwhile, a man who took ill behind the wheel of his car died despite efforts to resuscitate him.
Police officers battled in vain to save the 62-year-old who collapsed while driving in Aberdeen’s Caroline Place around 8.15pm on Saturday.
Officers were seen giving CPR, and an ambulance was also called.
The road was cordoned-off between the junction of Hutcheon Street and Rosemount Terrace.
A police spokesman said: “The driver of the vehicle had taken ill within his vehicle and subsequently died.”
