A woman has died and five people left seriously injured in hospital following a crash on the A90 Aberdeen to Peterhead road this afternoon.
Police and ambulance teams were called to the scene of the incident on the A90, just south of Toll of Birness shortly before 2pm.
Five people were rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and a woman, 57, died of her injuries at the scene.
The crash involved a black Megane and a brown Vauxhall.
Sergeant Neil Morrison of Road Policing said: “Enquiries into the cause of this collision are at an early stage however we would ask anyone who was in the area at the time or who saw either of these vehicles in the area prior to collision to come forward.”
The road was closed between Ellon and Toll of Birness throughout the afternoon while a collision investigation team and vehicle recovery attend the crash.
Traffic is being diverted northbound through Ellon along the A948 Ellon to Auchnagatt route.
Southbound traffic is being diverted along the A975 coastal route through Newburgh.
