VIDEO: Time to put the sparkle back in the Granite City

The annual council campaign to make the Granite City sparkle has been launched.

Last year thousands flocked to Aberdeen’s parks, beaches and community areas armed with litter pickers and black bags.

This year’s Clean Up Aberdeen campaign will ask the same again of big hearted citizens.

A team of volunteers launched the season of cleaning at the Torry Battery.

The initiative is being led by the city council’s environmental services team and the public are being encouraged to take part by tidying up somewhere important to their area or wildlife.

Black bin bags, litter picking tongs, gloves and high-vis vests can be provided and the environmental services team will uplift any rubbish collected.

Council leader Jenny Laing said the simplest way to keep the city tidy was to not drop litter in the first place.

She said: “We can all make such a big difference to our environment by not dropping litter.

“We hope this Clean Up Aberdeen campaign will raise awareness that everyone has to do their bit to keep our city clean, safe and beautiful.

“Our public spaces are for everyone to enjoy and if we can influence a change in the litter dropping habits in the city with this campaign then we will be improving the quality of life for both residents and our city wildlife.

“We have dozens of staff who work hard to keep our city clean, however, they can’t be everywhere at all times so these community efforts are to be applauded.

“We’d also encourage people to report any problem areas to us where items have been dumped or there are volumes of litter.

“We would encourage people to join forces for the benefit of their community.”

Clean Up Aberdeen is part of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s national drive to make Scotland the tidiest country in Europe.
